SOULFORCE Q EQUALITY RIDE VISITS HOUGHTON COLLEGE
(Houghton, NY) -- Yesterday, the 2010 Soulforce Q Equality Ride visited Houghton College, bringing a message of hope and affirmation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people. The second stop on the traveling forum's sixteen college tour, Houghton College administration has been working with Equality Ride leadership for months on a day of learning, growth, and productive dialogue.
The Equality Ride is a national bus tour to Christian colleges. The 18 to 29-year-old Equality Riders advocate safe educational settings for all students, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.
On Tuesday, March 9th, the Soulforce Q Equality Riders arrived at Houghton College for a full day of rigidly scheduled events. Equality Riders joined with assigned "Houghton hosts" chosen from the faculty, staff and student body of the college for a campus tour, individual and group discussion, and communal meals.
"There were certainly some concerns and difficult compromises during the planning process. Yet despite disagreements between the institutional perspective of Houghton and that of the Equality Ride, I think today was a time of growth and fruitful discussion." said Equality Rider and former Houghton student, Andrew Langdon. "Many students expressed their desire to be an ally to the LGBTQ community or their need for safe spaces and an affirming message."
Houghton also hosted a formal panel about how the Christian community should respond to issues of sexuality and gender. Participants included Houghton Professor Rich Eckley, Kathleen J. Elliott of the local Agape Counseling Associates, inc, and Emily Zahn, Equality Rider and West Virginia Wesleyan junior. The forum was moderated by Dr. Michael Lastoria and was very well attended by hundreds of members of the student body as well as some members of the community.
"I think it was a really wonderful time to share my perspective as a gay Christian with the Houghton community who may not feel that homosexuality and Christianity can be compatible. All the panelists were able to find common ground and come to an understanding that the two are not mutually exclusive and that the Christian church needs to be responding in a more loving and responsible way to its LGBTQ members," explains Emily Zahn, the Equality Ride panelist.
The Equality Ride bus is on the road through April 24, 2010, bringing dialogue, hope, and change to schools across the country. Future stops include:

VIRGINIA DELEGATE INTRODUCES BILL TO REPEAL SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BAN
"Virginia will not recognize "a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance, or effects of marriage." Nor will the state recognize "another union, partnership, or other legal status to which is assigned the rights, benefits, obligations, qualities, or effects of marriage." To repeal that amendment, Englin is sponsoring House Joint Resolution 55. It is similar to proposals he carried in 2007 and 2009. They did not get much attention, but Englin says he won't give up. HJ 55, which is being co-sponsored by Delegate L. Kaye Kory, D-Falls Church, has been referred to the House Privileges and Elections Committee. The panel has not voted on the measure." > Full Story. MIDWEST'S LARGEST LGBT PRIDEFESTIVAL OPENS JUNE 11; SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
MILWAUKEE, WI - Summer in Milwaukee will once again shine brighter, as the 23rd annual PrideFest celebration kicks off on the Summerfest grounds this June 11-13. For the second year in a row, organizers have chosen the second weekend in June to celebrate. Another new development is the change to the hours of operation. Festival attendees can now enjoy an earlier start time, as the gates open at 3pm on Friday June 11th.
The Saturday and Sunday schedules begin at 12pm, opening one hour later than in previous years. On all three nights, festival goers can enjoy entertainment, activities and celebration until midnight, when festival grounds close.
Pridefest organizers are also seeking dedicated individuals and organizations to donate thier time and energy as volunteers on the grounds.
"We will be accepting applications online up until the week of Pridefest," says Volunteer Director Deon Young. "We want to make sure that we have the volunteers we need to make PrideFest Milwaukee 2010 a success!"
PrideFest is a non-profit organization that relies on the energy and ideas of a dedicated team of volunteers. As the biggest LGBT event in Wisconsin and one of the nation's premier Pride festivals, PrideFest seeks volunteers with a wide range of skills.

WHY IS OK REP. JASON NELSON CHANGING JUST 1 WORD OF A LAW BANNING...
Jason Nelson, the Republican Oklahoma state rep - who does not have gay face! - introduced HB 3408, called "An act relating to marriage" which would make it a felony for a minister of the gospel to solemnize a marriage not recognized by the state. Apparently their 2004 constitutional amendment codifying marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution, banning civil unions and other legal protections for gay and lesbian people, and punishing any issuance of a marriage license to a same-sex couple weren't enough to "protect marriage." Now we have to throw ministers in jail for 1 to 5 years just to make quadruple sure.
